Railroad Engineers Issue - Scott #993
railroad engineers of America. The first day cancellation ceremonies were held in Jackson,
Tennessee. The central figure in the stamp is Casey Jones, who has become a symbol for
all railroad men, according to the news release from the period.
Mint sheets of the stamp as well as first day covers are available from dealers and are
found frequently on the Internet auction site eBay.
Engine #382 from Tuvalu
The tiny South Pacific island country of Tuvalu issued a series of Railroad related stamps in the
mid-1980s which included this pair (Scott #236).
These stamps are somewhat difficult to find. The illustration is courtesy of the Casey Jones Unit of the American Topical Association.
100th Anniversary Special Cancellations
The US Postal Service offers special pictorial cancellations to commemorate local events celebrated in
communities throughout the nation. The 100th anniversary of the wreck at Vaughan has prompted four that we know of. The first was on March 11 at the Nashville Stamp Show (shown here). Next came QPEX 2000 in Manchester, New Hampshire on April 2.
Then on April 30, both the museums at Jackson and here in Water Valley offered cancellations. Click on the illustration of our cancellation to the left and you'll be taken to the special information page.
43rd Annual Coinarama Commemorative Medal
commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Casey Jones train wreck featuring an image of the 638, according to a news release from the group.
The Coinarama will be held on July 8 and 9, 2000, at the Scottish Rite Memorial Center, Mission Valley, San Diego. Designer of the medal is Bob Ekdom. They were struck in .999 fine silver (limited to an edition of 70), golden bronze, oxidized bronze and copper. A set of all four is $27.50, postpaid. The three off medals are $2.50 each or three for $6.00 plus $.7 postage. They are available from Dorothy C. Baber, 611 Oakwood Way, El Cajon, CA 92021. Telephone number 619-442-2726.
These are really beautiful medals and are being offered at a reasonable price. The obvious error is that the coin features engine #638 which was Casey's freight engine on the Water Valley to Jackson run. Also, note that the illustration is a very early wood burner instead of the correct 2-8-0 engine.
