Some excellent houses...

One of my favorite things about Water Valley is that there are lots of interesting and unique-looking houses here. I've taken pictures of some of my favorites. You can click on the thumbnails below to see them. Note: These pictures are pretty big, around 100K each.

A HouseThis house is very staid and sober, as befits it sitting behind a funeral parlor. Although originally built as a dwelling, it was converted to a hospital at some point -- a former Water Valley resident remembers his father visiting someone convalescing there in the mid 1950s. Now it's a house again. Thanks to Stephen Inman for this information.

Another HouseWraparound porches like this one are very common in Water Valley. Note the gingerbread detailing at the roofline.

Yet Another HouseThis house was built by a retired railroadman in the 1860s. In 1984 a tornado damaged it and blew away the ghost of a Confederate soldier which had haunted it for many years.

Still Yet Another HouseIt was hard to get a good angle because of all the trees on the lot. Rumor has it this house features a bowling alley on the 3rd floor.

Still Yet Another HouseThis house interests me for 2 reasons: the sharply pitched roof seems unnecessary in this area, where a half-inch of snow counts as a blizzard; and one day as I was walking past it I saw a very dead cat in the front yard.

An Amazing HouseThe very picture of exuberant Victorian excess.

A Wreck Of A HouseEven as trashed as it is you can see how lovely this house was and could be. Nothing that, oh, $20,000 and lots of elbow grease couldn't fix. Casey Jones, the railroad engineer whose death was immortalized in song (more than once), used to board here. Thanks to Steve Hedges for this information.
